| 8th June - 25th July 2009 'Outlining Silver' - A collection of vases by Angela Cork Angela is a contemporary designer silversmith specialising in creating useable, sculptural objects that do not blend into the background. Her timeless designs compliment any setting, whether it be an 18th century mantlepiece or a restaurant table. Angela's aim is to create visually challenging pieces which retain their functionality. She is concerned with the balance of the object and also the space around and within it. Her range of vases employ very simple, clean designs that juxtapose and yet enhance the organic nature of the flowers being displayed which although sit gracefully within the vase, are rigidly controlled as to their position, size and quantity. Angela also likes to challenge our traditional expectation for these objects to sit motionless and inert on a flat surface by introducing movement to the pieces, whether they rock, hang or float on water. |

18th June 2009 - 1st August 2009 East meets West - Chien-Wei Chang In Eastern metaphysics, bamboo is a symbol of modesty: “Because its body is empty it can contain substances, because it is hollow people can use it as instruments to make beautiful music”. In Eastern societies, bamboo grows everywhere and is seen as a vital, everyday material. It is used to build houses, vehicles, furniture, containers, tools, utensils and instruments. The association of bamboo as a cultural symbol of the East is now widely accepted in Western societies. Combining his own distinctive cultural background with an innovative insight into domestic functions in western society, Chien-Wei constantly produces highly decorative, craftily made, beautiful objects with function. As a silversmith, now based in the UK, Chien-Wei explores how a very different material can be seen as part of everyday life. By representing the form of bamboo in silver, he expresses a different kind of everyday beauty for our contemporary lives. |
