Enamel, glass and porcelain may look very different in their final state. They have, however, many raw materials in common, derived from the earth and dramatically transformed by the action of fire.
Glass can be worked in a molten, plastic or solid state. The plasticity of hot glass allows it to be manipulated in numerous ways, including blowing, drawing, pinching, impressing and marvering.
Porcelain contains both clay and glass making materials and once fired to a high temperature (1280 1350°C) vitrify to create qualities of whiteness, translucency and sensuality of surface.
Studio Fusion specialises in vitreous enamel, a glass bonded onto metal under heat. The inclusion of glass and porcelain artists in the gallery extends the theme of fusion and fire:
